About the Production
*commence 3rd-person description* #GingerPrivilege is Bay Bryan’s second solo show. In similar fashion to Growing Into My Beard, Bay weaves together different performative elements to tell a story or, in this case, explore a specific topic.
In #GingerPrivilege, Bay (through his many characters) seeks to understand his own personal privilege as well as the concept of privilege as a whole (with all the nuance that comes along with this sensitive subject). Through combined elements of red-nose clown, sock puppets, storytelling, music and more our shape-shifting ginger attempts the impossible: to once-and-for-all SOLVE EVERYTHING.
Most Recent Production
*and back to me talking* On February 21st, 2019 #GingerPrivilege had it’s first sharing of it’s still-developing script at Interplay Theatre in Leeds, UK. Our warm audience of about 10 people was very receptive to both the show and the subject matter. Both myself and Claire Seddon (director) were able to get some great immediate feedback. The Goal of this sharing was NOT to alienate or purposefully cause discomfort, it was rather to create an experience that is consensually interactive, entertaining, fun and leaves room for a conversation following if people are wanting to engage in one —after all, the broad topic of privilege is quite personal and it’s one of those things that can potentially strike a nerve. What we learned is that show, although still in it’s infancy, is already doing what we set out to do: It got people thinking about privilege and what it means to them AND it got them talking about it to —Excitedly!— Which was honestly a relief!
WHAT’S NEXT? In Similar Fashion to Growing into My Beard this show is not done growing yet —there’s many conversations being had and research still underway that continues to inspire more content for this show. My ultimate aim is to create a slick 1-hr production that could play in ANY SPACE from conventional theatre stages to coffee shops to living rooms; I would love to collaborate and invite speakers in to talk after the show and to host a live (and possibly live-streamed) Q&A.
Join the ongoing conversation on the #GingerPrivilege FACEBOOK PAGE and feel free to engage at whatever level you feel comfortable!
